Appointment

VT blackburg campus

Membership in the Faculty of Health Sciences is available to Virginia Tech faculty members who hold a graduate or professional degree in a relevant discipline.

Appointments to the Faculty of Health Sciences are term appointments, ranging from one to five years, and are renewable without limit. The FHS does not award tenure, and service as a member of the FHS is not tenure earning.

The selection process for faculty appointments is based on research, teaching, outreach, and/or administrative contributions to Virginia Tech’s biomedical and health sciences initiatives. The process involves an evaluation of the individual’s application and a recommendation to the senior vice president and provost. The senior vice president and provost makes the final decision and informs the individual of the outcome of the application by letter.

Faculty members employed by Virginia Tech must have a primary appointment in a senior management unit, whether a college or school, an institute, or a vice presidential unit. Faculty members employed by other institutions who wish to be considered for appointment to the FHS must have an adjunct or affiliated appointment in a Virginia Tech senior management unit, whether a college or school, an institute, or a vice presidential unit.

Appointments may be made in any faculty category, with rank determined by qualifications. For current Virginia Tech faculty members, this will be a secondary title at the existing academic rank—assistant professor, associate professor, or professor—followed by “of Health Sciences.”

Faculty members with adjunct or affiliated appointments may be appointed using an unqualified title—assistant professor, associate professor, or professor—followed by “of Health Sciences.”

Those interested in joining the FHS should submit a request for an appointment. Questions should be addressed to, Billi Hutchings (billi09@vtc.vt.edu; 540-526-2289), or the vice president for health sciences and technology, Dr. Michael Friedlander (friedlan@vt.edu; 540-526-2013).
